Counting rules for recorded crime

The Home Office has published updated guidance for a number of Counting Rules. The Home Office Counting Rules provide a national standard for recording crime and counting of ‘notifiable’ offences recorded by police forces. The guidance advises police forces about what offences are contained in each category to ensure consistent and accurate crime recording.

Rape Monitoring Group Dashboard Publication

HMICFRS have published the Rape Monitoring Group (RMG), a multi-agency group in England and Wales, dashboard which contains data from 44 different force areas in England and Wales. The data shows how cases of rape are dealt with at all stages of the criminal justice process.

Key facts include an increase in recording of rape. However there has been a fall in cases continuing to conviction. However, there are a number of factors that could affect these statistics. These include, victims not wanting to take cases forward, advice from the CPS, or a change in the classification of the offence; or a change in the classification of the counting rules.

Counting rules for recorded crime

The government have released new guidance for the Home Office Counting Rules. The Rules concern the national standard for recording and counting notifiable offences in England and Wales.

The guidance includes an update to the general rules for recording crime as well as a breakdown of individual offences in each category with an explanation of how they are classified.
